Just recently, a woman of American-Russian origin was sentenced to 12 years in prison for donations she made to some charity. But what exactly happened?
A 33-year-old dancer from Russia, Kseniya Khovanova, has been sentenced to prison for her donation to a charity. Having married an American citizen, Kseniya shifted to Los Angeles. She went to Russia in February to meet her family and was detained by the Russian authorities on treason charges. After a few court hearings, she has been sentenced to 12 years in prison.

So, what was her crime? She donated just $51, about 4,200 rupees. You can wonder at this point how a person gets punished so severely for making a donation. The Russian government says that Kseniya donated to a Ukrainian charity, and that was an act of treason according to them. The Russian government explained that Kseniya was collecting donations for some American organization working on Ukrainian matters; as if this explanation could charge her with treason. Consequently, she was tried, found guilty, and sentenced to 12 years in prison.
On the other hand, Kseniya said she did not know her donation would be used on Russia’s enemy. From the global arena, Russia condemned the United States for jailing its citizens on cooked charges. The lady was represented in court sitting quietly in her white top and jeans. She appears devastated. The video went viral on social media as she appeared in court.
