Nature seems to have unleashed its wrath over Nepal due to incessant rains that have disrupted normal life and caused extensive damage. With the onset of monsoon, heavy rains have pummeled the country, triggering landslides and lightning strikes that have left 20 people dead, the National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Authority said.

In the Lamjung district, some 125 kilometers from Kathmandu, landslides occurred following a night of lightning storms. Three houses were destroyed in floods and landslides, and six people died, including two children, local officials said. Others had nine people killed by lightning strikes.

According to district official Tek Kumar Regmi, four persons died in the floods in Morang district, 500 kilometers from Kathmandu. Landslides also occurred in the Kaski and Okhaldhunga areas of eastern Nepal. Rescue teams have been sent out for assistance. The annual occurrence of floods and landslides, which kill hundreds, is setting off alarm bells.

It added that two people were missing in the landslide incidents; the search for these people is on but their whereabouts are yet unknown. In the 17 days, 28 deaths were reported across the nation and as many as 33 districts were badly hit by floods.

The incessant rainfall has widely triggered destruction in various parts of the country, resulting in massive power failure and vast destruction of the telecommunication system. Such incidents this year have, according to Ministry records, reached their highest toll. Incessant rainfall for the past two days swelled Melamchi and Indrawati rivers and caused immense problems to locals with floods and landslides spiraling out of control.

As rivers swelled, flood intensity in mountainous areas increased and swept away houses at several places. Rescue operation is on for some others who are missing. Reports say that officials have predicted more rainfall in the upcoming days and have issued a warning to their residents in river basin areas.
