Of late, the Hyderabad Disaster Management and Asset Protection Agency (HYDRA) has been making headlines for being extremely aggressive toward illegal constructions in various parts of Telangana. In its latest turn of actions, HYDRA recently targeted senior actor Akkineni Nagarjuna’s N Convention Centre, alleging that it had encroached upon the Tumidikunta Lake. The latter went ahead and destroyed parts of the convention centre on grounds that it was an illegal construction on lake land. As a result, this development is a hot topic within the film industry and political circles of Telangana.

In a reaction to these allegations and actions, Akkineni Nagarjuna denied having encroached any land in open media. To get the case formally closed, the veteran actor stated that he has not encroached land by any means and the N Convention Centre is constructed totally on legally owned patta land; and to get the matter finalized formally, Nagarjuna has approached the High Court demanding justice and clear view over the legality over his property.

In the midst of all the speculation flowing everywhere in the media, Nagarjuna said it on his Twitter handle the other day to express his stance and appeal to his fans and well-wishers. In a tweet oozing out the emotions he holds, the superstar asked them not to believe any rumors and unfounded reports till the High Court delivers its verdict. Much of what is being said nowadays, however, remains speculative in nature.

He also referred to an earlier order from the Special Court under the Andhra Pradesh Land Grabbing Act, dated 24 February 2014, Order SR 3943/2011, which had held that there was no encroachment upon the Tumidikunta Lake. He expressed faith in the judiciary and said he would respect whatever decision the High Court would come up with in the matter involving the legality of the N Convention Centre.

The unchecked construction has, however, thrown up important questions on property rights and regulation enforcement; even as HYDRA pushes in with its demand against illegal constructions, more await to see the judgement on Nagarjuna’s appeal to the High Court. This is, in essence, a reflection of liberal tensions between development, environmental conservation, and legality, in the high-flying spaces of modern urban growth.

It is developing, and supporters and observers are waiting for more information with the hope of receiving a decision that provides justice and decides the facts on the controversy.
