0:00

The temperature in Andhra Pradesh politics has risen again with the completion of 100 days in power for the ruling coalition. The grapevine is abuzz with rumors of defections with several leaders of the YSR Congress Party reportedly joining the Telugu Desam Party. A spate of defections has heated up the political scene in the state, which till now had been pretty silent.

Adding fuel to the fire is MLC Potula Sunitha announcing her resignation from the party and from her position in the legislative council, marking the beginning probably of a list of high-profile exits.

Sunitha had already faxed her resignation letter to the Chairman of the Council and informed him that she would shortly make an announcement about her future course of action. This has thrown wide-open the speculations that more MPs and MLCs belonging to YSRCP may be joining her shortly.

Most significantly, Rajya Sabha MPs, Mopidevi Venkataramana, and Beeda Mastan Rao are said to be on the verge of submitting their resignations from both their posts and membership of the party.

In fact, the two Rajya Sabha MPs have already sought appointments with Chairman Jagdeep Dhankhar and are likely to submit their resignation letters today. The two MPs, who reached Delhi last night to plan their move, are scheduled to meet the Chairman at 12:30 PM. Sources said that both Mopidevi and Mastan Rao would join the TDP in the presence of Nara Lokesh on September 5th or 6th.

While the former minister Alla Nani from the Eluru district had already quit the YSRCP, his resignation has left the circles rife with speculations about defections. Gaining ground in these speculations were reports that MP Mopidevi Venkataramana would be the next one to go, while the sudden decision of lady legislator Potula Sunitha caught many by surprise. Following her joining ranks, her actions indeed beg the question if there are others.

TDP leader Chandrababu Naidu has reacted to the defections by stating that whoever joins the TDP has to quit their present positions. He declared that new entrants shall be taken in as per their character and that the party is committed to adherence to moral values in the membership selection process. Naidu’s perseverance for moral uprightness, while emboldening the party, has acquired importance in political circles.

When the drama of defections is unfolding, all eyes are on how many more YSRCP leaders would enter the fray and on the TDP to see how they will manage the inflow of new members.
