There is a connection between the South Indian cinema and politics. M G Ramachandran (MGR), an actor turned politician, who served as CM in Tamil Nadu for a decade before his death in 1987. Tamil actress Jayalalithaa also became Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu. In 2005, Vijayakanth, known to fans as Captain, formed DMDK, which played a crucial role in Tamil politics. DMDK, contested all seats in 2006 TN Assembly elections. Though it won just the seat that Vijayakanth contested for, DMDK bagged 10 % of the votes.
Kamal Haasan and Sarath Kumar are also active in politics. Vijay, referred to as Thalapathy by his fans, has also announced the name of his political party TVK and today morning he also unfurled party flag.
