“BJP’s Manoj Sonkar Clinches Victory in Chandigarh Mayoral Election Amidst Political Tensions”

In a recent twist of political events, BJP’s Manoj Sonkar emerged victorious in the Chandigarh Mayoral election held on January 30. Originally scheduled for January 18, the election faced a postponement due to the ill health of the presiding officer, Anil Masih. Tensions flared as Congress and AAP councilors staged a walkout in protest during the second round of polling for the positions of Senior Deputy Mayor and Deputy Mayor.

Allegations of political drama surfaced, with AAP and Congress members claiming that the delay was a strategic move orchestrated by BJP. The election took place on January 30 following a rescheduling ordered by the Punjab and Haryana High Court UT. In the 35-member Chandigarh Municipal Corporation House, AAP and Congress combined for 20 votes, while BJP held 15 votes. The victory threshold was set at 19, and BJP’s mayoral candidate, Manoj Sonkar, secured the win with 16 votes. AAP candidate Kuldeep Kumar received 12 votes, and 8 votes were declared invalid. The announcement triggered protests and a walkout by AAP and Congress members before the election of Senior Deputy Mayor and Deputy Mayor commenced.
