The contestants for Congress party president elections have been finalised. As the last date for filing nominations ended on Friday, Sep 30 two senior leaders have stood in the race. Former Leader of Opposition in Loksabha and Rajyasabha Mallikarjun Kharge, Thiruvananthapuram MP Shashi Tharoor are in the fray. Incidentally both are from South India.
While Shashi Tharoor has announced his interest in contesting for Congress president post long back, Mallikarjun Kharge has emerged as a surprise candidate in the last minute. His name was not in the race for Congress president post elections until a day ago. But on the last day of filing of nominations, he entered the fray.
Just a day before Mallikarjun Kharge filing nominations, Digvijay Singh declared that he will contest for president post. But as Congress high command backed Kharge, Digvijay backed out of the contest and did not file nomination.
