Former chief minister of Jharkhand and senior JMM leader Champai Soren is all set to join BJP on August 30 in Ranchi. An announcement to this regard was made by the Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma late on Monday.

On X, Sarma posted that Soren recently met Union Home Minister Amit Shah, sealing his official move to the BJP. The meeting of Soren with Shah and then Soren leaving Shah’s residence along with Sarma has generated additional anticipation in this political shift.

Soren had been dropping hints over a new political party for quite a while, airing his disgruntlement and even alleging that he had been “insulted” back when he was leading the Jharkhand Chief Minister. He mentioned several complaints, right from not being allowed to hold meetings of the legislative party to pressing demands for resignation out of the blue-all these compelled him to think about an alternative course in politics.

Soren explained, through his social media posts, that his effort was directed towards raising the demands of tribals, the poor, the laborers, students, and backward classes of Jharkhand and reiterated that he would continue raising the demand of his people and work for their upliftment, which had been his promise, even after his resignation.

The entry of Soren into the BJP is likely to impact Jharkhand’s politics with state assembly elections due later this year. If at all, his previous experience as a CM and his leadership do influence politics, being on the side of a reputed national party drove it inside out, not just in the ongoing political tussles shaping electoral outcomes, but also the political strategy of things in Jharkhand.
