Hajj Pilgrims: Over 550 deaths this year


Officials have confirmed over 550 pilgrims dead in this year’s Hajj pilgrimage. Egyptians account for the highest country of origin with 323 deaths among them. Many died due to complications that arose from the scorching temperatures. Another 60 Jordanians have been reported dead. The temperatures in Mecca are currently recorded at over 50 degrees Celsius. Last year, more than 240 deaths were recorded.

Official statements have been released, confirming that many of the dead were ailing from various health complications. They have revealed that so many pilgrims from countries such as Indonesia were not prepared for such conditions. Many are trying to identify the dead and contact their families. Among the dead are 60 residents of Jordan. The number of deaths in the event last year was 240, with many being from Indonesia. This year, the number of pilgrims for this Hajj pilgrimage could cross even more than 1.8 million. The pilgrimage is due to end on Wednesday. Health officials in Saudi Arabia have issued warnings about intense heat from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. and asked the pilgrims to remain vigilant.
