Harini Amarasuriya (54) has been appointed as the new Prime Minister of Sri Lanka. President Anura Kumara Dissanayake administered the oath to her on Tuesday. Dinesh Gunawardhana resigned from the post of Prime Minister as part of the transfer of power after the presidential election. With this, President Dissanayake appointed Harini Amarasuriya, a rights activist and university lecturer, as the Prime Minister.

Harini Amarasuriya has become the 3rd woman PM of Sri Lanka. Before Harini Amarasuriya, Sirimavo Bandaranaike and Chandrika Kumaratunga have held this post. Chandrika Kumaratunga served as Prime Minister for two months and 24 days before contesting the 1994 presidential election and being elected President. Now in the last 2 decades, Harini Amarasuriya is the first woman to take oath as PM.

Amarasuriya has been given the charge of the ministries of Labor, Industry, Justice, Education, Science and Technology, Health and Investment.

Amarasuriya’ appointment is noteworthy due to her deep connection with India, having studied at Delhi University during the early 1990s.

President Dissanayake issued an order on Tuesday night dissolving Sri Lankan Parliament. Elections to Parliament will be held on November 14.
