"Hathras Stampede: Supreme Court's Key Decision on the Investigation of the Hathras Stampede Case"

Hathras Stampede:landmark order of SC on petition

The Supreme Court has delivered a landmark ruling on the petition it received regarding the Hathras stampede. According to Chief Justice D. Y. Chandrachud, a listing of the petition for hearing was on Monday. A stampede, which occurred during a satsang by Bhole Baba in Hathras on the 2nd of this month, took away more than 120 lives. It has sought the formation of a five-member committee comprising a retired judge, leading an inquiry into the incident. The petition has prayed to the apex court to direct the UP government to initiate action against those responsible, based on the committee’s report.

Advocate Vishal Tiwari mentioned that a petition concerning the Hathras stampede had been moved into the Supreme Court and the court was ready to list it. He said that the hearing would be held shortly. The plea had sought the constitution of a committee with a retired Supreme Court judge to get a report. Most of the victims were women and children who had come for the ‘satsang’ from different parts of the country, including Rajasthan, Haryana, and Madhya Pradesh. The vehicles ran up to three kilometers.

The stampede occurred when people rushed to collect Bhole Baba’s dust after the satsang. There are criticisms that the organizers and police people failed to maintain order. Meanwhile, the police are doing a thorough investigation regarding the case with several arrests.
