Heavy flooding in the catchment areas has resulted in a tremendous inflow into the Nagarjuna Sagar Project. The authorities raised 20 gates of the project by five feet to discharge the water downstream. The inflow is rising every hour at the Srisailam reservoir and the flood situation is worsening with each passing day.

Presently, Srisailam is releasing about 2,10,408 cusecs of floodwater into the Nagarjuna Sagar reservoir. Since the latter reservoir is already full, the authorities were letting the water down as it is coming.

The water level at Nagarjuna Sagar was being maintained at 590 feet, with a storage capacity of 312 TMC.

It becomes quintessential to continuously monitor and manage the levels of the reservoir, as the excess waters have to be safely released while protecting the lower areas from potential flooding. Authorities are always vigilant to manage the heavy inflows judiciously to maintain the structural integrity of the dam so that any overflow situation doesn’t arise.
