“Heavy Rain Forecast in Chennai Due to Bay of Bengal Low Pressure”

Chennai and several parts of Tamil Nadu are currently experiencing significant weather changes due to a developing low-pressure area in the Bay of Bengal. This weather system, which is expected to intensify into a depression by November 16, will not directly cross the Tamil Nadu coast but is likely to result in heavy to very heavy rain across the state.

As of now, Delta districts in Tamil Nadu have started receiving rain, and the northern coastal districts, including Chennai, are anticipated to experience heavy showers. On November 15, areas such as Cuddalore, Villupuram, Chengalpattu, Kancheepuram, and Pondicherry are expected to face heavy to very heavy rain, while regions like Tirupattur, Vellore, Ranipet, Tiruvallur, Chennai, Tiruvannamalai, Kallakurichi, Perambalur, Ariyalur, Tiruchirappalli, Pudukkottai, Thanjavur, Tiruvarur, Nagapattinam, Mayiladuthurai, and Karaikal are likely to see heavy rainfall. Following this, on November 16, the Chennai region, including surrounding areas such as Tiruvallur, Chengalpattu, Kancheepuram, Ranipet, Vellore, Tirupattur, and Tiruvannamalai, is expected to receive heavy showers.

This year, the northeast monsoon commenced a bit late, starting in the last week of October, and has been relatively subdued, particularly in the northern and interior districts of Tamil Nadu. Only a few southern districts have been receiving substantial rainfall. Overall, the state is experiencing a significant rainfall deficit of 17%. Specifically, between October 1 and November 13, Chennai recorded 190 mm of rainfall, which is 61% less than the normal amount of 485.2 mm. The current low-pressure system is expected to mitigate some of this rainfall deficit, according to meteorologists.
