Kiwis Captain Kane Makes Sensational Decision, Says Goodbye to Captaincy

New Zealand captain Kane Williamson has taken a sensational decision. He has resigned from the captaincy of ODIs and T20s. It is already known that Kane Williamson had given up Test captaincy responsibilities. Now, with his decision not to continue as captain for ODIs and T20s as well, there is a lot of interest in who amongst the earmarked successors will be captain across all three formats. Moreover, he has also turned down the central contract offered by New Zealand Cricket for the season 2024-25.

Was Failure the Reason?

This was followed by the major failure in the T20 World Cup 2024. For the first time in T20 World Cup history, New Zealand exited from the group stage and perhaps this prompted the decision of Kane Williamson. New Zealand didn’t even make it to the semi-finals and had to head home early.

In the first match of this mega tournament, they lost badly against Afghanistan by 84 runs. They then lost to the West Indies by 13 runs. New Zealand’s hopes were dashed with these two back-to-back losses. The other two are against Uganda and Papua New Guinea in the last two matches. Of course, they won, but that did not benefit them, and they did not qualify for the Super-8. Following the final match, Kane Williamson announced his resignation from captaincy; it was mentioned on New Zealand’s official website.

Retirement Ahead?

Kane Williamson stepped down from captaincy in all three formats. The fans are speculating that with the series of decisions, an announcement of retirement might not be far away. However, Kane hinted indirectly that he will continue playing in all three formats. He expressed that playing for New Zealand is a great opportunity and there is still a lot that he wants to give to the team.

Kane Williamson has set quite a few records in his career. The New Zealand captain led them to the Test Championship title in 2021. They have also reached the finals of the 2019 ODI World Cup and became the runner-up in the 2021 T20 World Cup. He has also played 100 Tests in his career and has also played 165 ODIs and 93 T20 matches. Of these, he had led in 40 Tests, 91 ODIs and 75 T20s. Though he is not a Telugu, ‘Kane Mama’ – a sobriquet used by fans to refer to him since the time he played for Sunrisers Hyderabad in the IPL – has stuck.

Asked if he would turn out in the colors for the T20 World Cup 2026, Kane responded with a smile. He mentioned there’s a lot of time before that mega event and situations might so change, but he’d see that conditions are favorable.
