Kumaraswamy might be a kingmaker once again

Janata Dal (Secular) leader and former Chief Minister is busy campaigning for his party candidates and planning strategies to fight BJP and Congress in the Assembly elections. He has successfully conducted Pancharatna Yatra to reach out to voters. In fact, Kumaraswamy is the first leader to start campaigning for upcoming Assembly elections in Karnataka. JDS is also the first party to announce the names of MLA candidates.

Besides campaigning and attending public meetings, Kumaraswamy is also focused on hitting back at allegations by his opponents that JDS is a family party.

If Kumaraswamy has to become an influential figure after the elections, it is necessary that he should win as many Assembly seats as possible. For that, it is necessary that he should present JDS as a party of people belonging to all sections rather than just Deve Gowda family. He should also create confidence among people that he can deliver corruption free and better governance than Congress and BJP parties.

In the 224 member Assembly, JDS won 37 MLA seats in 2018. But luck smiled on Kumaraswamy as he became Chief Minister. Though BJP was the single largest party, Kumaraswamy became CM with the support of Congress. As Congress wanted to stop BJP from forming a government at any cost, it even sacrificed CM post to JDS and formed a government. With these developments, everyone felt that there would not be a more lucky person than Kumaraswamy.

Though Kumaraswamy’s government could not last long, he kept himself active and has been working hard to be relevant in Karnataka politics. Though he came into politics as the son of former PM Deve Gowda, by now he has carved a special image for himself in Karnataka.

Though JDS is not as strong as BJP and Congress all over Karnataka, it has a strong presence in the Mysuru Karnataka region. It is also strong in Kalyana Karnataka region. Kumaraswamy has been claiming that JDS will win 70 to 80 seats in upcoming elections. We have to wait for two more months to see whether his words will come true or not.

But with BJP and Congress indulged in neck to neck fight and having their own problems, it appears that Kumaraswamy may once again become ‘king maker’ if not ‘king’ in 2023.
