Lok Sabha Polls: India Not Hindu Rashtra, Says Amartya Sen

Nobel laureate Amartya Sen has emphasized that the recent Lok Sabha election results suggest India is not a ‘Hindu Rashtra’.” He also expressed displeasure over the continued practice of keeping people behind bars ‘without trial’ in the country since British rule, which, he noted, has intensified under the BJP government compared to the Congress regime.

‘The fact that India is not a Hindu Rashtra has been reflected solely in the election results,’ Sen told a Bengali news channel at Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose International Airport here upon his arrival from the US on Wednesday evening.

‘We always hope for change after each election. However, practices such as arbitrary detention and widening wealth disparities, which occurred under the previous BJP-led government, continue. This must cease,’ he remarked.

The distinguished economist emphasized the need for political openness, particularly in a secular country with a secular Constitution like India. ‘I do not believe that the idea of transforming India into a Hindu Rashtra is appropriate,’ Sen stated.

He also criticized the composition of the new Union cabinet, describing it as ‘a replica of its predecessor’. ‘Ministers retain similar portfolios, and despite minor reshuffling, the politically influential remain powerful,’ he observed.

Recalling his childhood during British rule, Sen mentioned how relatives were detained without trial. ‘When I was young, many of my uncles and cousins were imprisoned without due process. We had hoped this practice would end with India’s independence. However, it persists, with the current government engaging in it more frequently than its predecessors,’ he lamented.

Regarding the BJP’s loss in the Faizabad Lok Sabha seat despite efforts to build the Ram Temple in Ayodhya, Sen criticized attempts to redefine India’s identity. ‘Spending vast sums on constructing the Ram Temple to promote India as a Hindu Rashtra should not occur in the land of Mahatma Gandhi, Rabindranath Tagore, and Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose. It reflects an effort to neglect India’s true identity, which must change,’ he insisted.

Sen also highlighted rising unemployment in India and the neglect of sectors like primary education and healthcare.”
