On Friday, Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge strongly criticized the central government over the MNREGA scheme. Mallikarjun Kharge alleged that the current state of MNREGA is a living monument of Prime Minister Modi’ betrayal of rural India.

Kharge said that on this day in 2005, the then Congress-led UPA government implemented the ‘Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Act’ (MGNREGA) to ensure the ‘right to work’ to crores of people in rural India.

In a post shared on the social media platform X, Mallikarjun Kharge wrote that currently there are 13.3 cr active workers in the country who are dependent on MNREGA despite low wages, very few working days and cancellation of job cards. Kharge alleged that under the guise of using technology and Aadhaar, Modi government has canceled the job cards of more than 7crore workers.

Due to this, these people have been cut off from MNREGA. The Congress President claimed that this year’s budget allocation for MNREGA is only 1.78 percent of the total budgetary allocation, which is the lowest in 10 years.
