On 7 August, National Handloom Day echoes the rich cultural heritage of handlooms in India and their role in the socio-economic development of the country. This day is celebrated with activities lined up by the government to promote and instill pride among handloom weavers.
The celebration began on August 7, 2015, chosen to mark the launching of the Swadeshi Movement on this day in 1905 for indigenous industries, with a special focus on handloom weaving. The Ministry of Textiles launched this observance to show respect and support for the handloom sector.

“National Handloom Day is just around the corner. It is the perfect time to celebrate Odisha’s 9 GI-tagged handloom treasures that safeguard and recognize the exclusivity of craftsmanship by our skilled weavers.” The declaration came on social media platform X while outlining the programs by the Handlooms, Textiles & Handicrafts Department of Odisha.

The Development Commissioner for Handlooms, New Delhi, has announced a series of activities—exclusive exhibitions, social media campaigns, and short film/documentary screenings— that will take place this year. These shall finally be brought to a close with a main function in New Delhi on August 7.
Events will be organized in all 75 prominent handloom clusters by the Weavers’ Service Centre, with the involvement of local MPs and MLAs, designers, awardees, and weavers to celebrate National Handloom Day. The promotion of handlooms, support for this sector, and an enhanced sense of pride amongst handloom weavers are some of the important objectives. The Ministry of Textiles is also organizing activities on the MyGov Portal in order to further popularize handlooms among citizens.
