Dr. Himanta Biswa Sarma said “Earlier, Muslim marriage and divorce registration was done by Qazi. This new bill will ensure that the Muslim marriage registration will be done by government , not by the Qazi. Marriages below 18 years of age will not be registered. The registering authority will be the Deputy Registrar of the Government of Assam.” Himanta Biswa Sarma further said that this new bill will be introduced in Aasam assembly session starting from August 22. According to Sarma, the main purpose of bringing this new bill is to fight against child marriage.
