In order to curb accidental issues, the ministry of road transport and highways made it mandatory for car makers to provide a minimum of 6 airbags in motor vehicles that can have a facility to carry up to 8 passengers. The Union Minister Nithin Gadkari, pointing to Intel India’s safety Pioneers conference 2022, said, around 1.5 lakh people are killed in 5 lakh accidents across the country every year.

The road transport and highways minister said, “We have decided to make it mandatory to provide a minimum of six airbags in motor vehicles. We want to save the lives of the people.” In January, the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways said that to enhance the safety of occupants of motor vehicles against lateral impact, it has decided to enhance safety measures by imposing the Central Motor Vehicles Rules, 1989.

The ministry said, “A draft notification has been issued on January 14, this year which mandates that vehicles of category M1, manufactured after October 1, shall be fitted with dual side/side torso airbags, one each for the persons occupying front row outboard seating positions.”

To discuss an airbag, it is a vehicle occupant-restraint system that interferes between the driver and the vehicle’s dashboard during a collision, thereby avoiding severe injuries.
