Maniratnam’s magnum opus Ponniyan Selvan 1 has won the hearts of Tamil film goers and now second part is all set for release. But this mega budget period drama is facing a very peculiar problem. Inspite of registering itself as a major hit, its second part is not getting any distributors to release in Telugu.
Ponniyan Selvan 2 release date has been fixed as April 28. It will be released as a pan Indian flick in multiple languages. While there is good response in Tamil, producers are witnessing lukewarm response in other languages. Especially the lack of response from Telugu states is worrying Mani Rathnam team as Andhra Pradesh and Telangana are big markets for his films.
When Ponniyan Selvan I released, though filmgoers appreciated Mani Rathnam’s efforts, they also opined that the story is completely steeped in Tamil history and others cannot relate to it. That’s the reason why Ponniyan Selvan 2 is finding no takers in others languages inspite of the presence of stars like Aishwarya Rai, Vikram, Trisha and others.
