Prime Minister Narendra Modi has urged Indian citizens to hold wedding celebrations within the country, emphasizing the economic and cultural benefits of doing so. This appeal aligns with the government’s ‘Vocal for Local’ initiative, which encourages the support of local products and industries. PM Modi expressed his concern about the trend of “big families” organizing weddings overseas, which leads to the outflow of the country’s funds.
In his monthly radio broadcast ‘Mann Ki Baat’, PM Modi highlighted that hosting weddings in India can significantly contribute to the nation’s economy by keeping finances within its borders and providing opportunities for local people to offer various services. He stressed the importance of selecting products made in India for wedding shopping.
Some trade organizations have estimated that the business generated during this wedding season could be around ₹ 5 lakh crore. PM Modi also remarked that such domestic celebrations are not only about economics but also about fostering a sense of national pride and contributing to nation-building. He noted that when the general populace participates actively in nation-building, it drives the country’s progress forward. This sentiment resonates with the success of other national initiatives like ‘Swachh Bharat Abhiyan’ and the push for increased digital payments, which exemplify how citizen-led efforts can lead to significant changes and advancements.
