Tributes poured in from across the political spectrum on the 80th birth anniversary of former Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi. PM Modi posted on social media platform X, “Tributes to our former Prime Minister Shri Rajiv Gandhi Ji on his birth anniversary.”
It was marked by the Congress leaders with equally meaningful messages. Lamented: Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge on Sunday praised Rajiv Gandhi’s beacon of hope that he ignited in millions and his incomparable contributions in leading India into the 21st century. Kharge said the most remarkable thing about Rajiv’s tenure is lowering the required voting age to 18, empowering Panchayati Raj, and leading the telecommunication and IT revolutions. He said it is these pioneering efforts that brought transformational changes in the country and added, “We pay our heartfelt tributes to Bharat Ratna Rajiv Gandhi ji.”

Rahul Gandhi, who is the Leader of the Opposition in the Lok Sabha, after laying some flowers on his father’s memorial at Veer Bhumi, reflected upon the legacy of his father. In an X post, Rahul said he was determined to further the vision of India that Rajiv Gandhi had, by citing “Papa, your teachings are my inspiration, and your dreams for India are my own.”
Congress General Secretary Jairam Ramesh underlined Rajiv Gandhi’s contribution to modernizing India, especially through its 1985 budget and a new education policy in 1986. Ramesh pointed out that with his leadership peace accords were signed for troubled areas like Assam and Punjab and he also remembered the foundation that was laid for India moving into software exports.
His commitment to secularism, unity, and a progressive India was appreciated, and it was being re-emphasized by the Congress party, now dedicated to the project of a prosperous and inclusive nation.
