PM Modi Unveils New Nalanda University Campus


On Wednesday, Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated a newly constructed campus of the historic Nalanda University in Bihar. This new campus is sited near the ruins of ancient Nalanda University in Rajgir. The newly built campus shall have two academic blocks. This new university was initially launched in 2014 with 14 students.

After reaching Nalanda University, Modi first carefully viewed the old heritage of the university. He then went on to the new campus where he planted a Bodhi tree.

Distinguished Guests

Among the various who attended the inauguration ceremony of the new campus at Nalanda University were foreign ambassadors, Indian ministers and governors, chief ministers, and other dignitaries. Guests of honor included External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar, Bihar Governor Rajendra Vishwanath Arlekar, Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar, and Nalanda University Chancellor Arvind Panagariya. Ambassadors from 17 countries, including Australia, Bangladesh, Bhutan, Brunei, Cambodia, China, Indonesia, Laos, Mauritius, Myanmar, New Zealand, Portugal, Singapore, South Korea, Sri Lanka, and Vietnam participated in the program.

Capacity of 1900 Students

The new campus at Nalanda University comprises two academic blocks with 40 classrooms to accommodate a total of 1900 students. At the campus, there exist two auditoriums with an accommodation capacity of 300 each, hostel facilities for approximately 550 students, a center for international center, an amphitheater that can seat 2000 people. Amongst other facilities are faculty club, sports complex, and other facilities provided to the students. This net-zero green campus was constructed, which was offered in cooperation with the countries of the East Asia Summit.

Glorious History

Nalanda University possesses a rich, ancient history. Historians indicate the institution was established in the year 427 AD as the first residential university in the world. Once upon a time, it had more than 10,000 students and 1,500 teachers from Eastern and Central Asia. It also imparted education for almost 800 years till invaders destroyed it in the 12th century.
