Polling Set to Start for UK General Elections

0:00

Within a few hours, polling for the UK general elections will start as all preparations have been completed for voting in 650 Parliamentary constituencies. This time the primary contest is between the Labour Party and the Conservative Party. However, according to surveys, the Conservative Party—led by British Prime Minister Rishi Sunak—is going to end up defeated. There is also a prevailing view that this time the Labour Party is going to come to power after 14 years in opposition.

Rishi Sunak, who took over as Prime Minister of the United Kingdom at a time when something unexpected was taking place in politics, faces the enormous hurdle of ensuring a win for his party in this general election. Polls indicate that the ruling Conservatives will lose in Thursday’s (July 4) – British parliamentary elections. The conservatives have been in office for as long as 14 years; vast is the opposition against them. Pre-poll opinion shows that the Labour Party has an excellent chance of coming into power in the UK after championing its campaign of change.

The present ruling party, the Conservative Party, has been leading the UK for the past 14 years, and it failed in most of the promises made by them during election times. The opposition to the present ruling party took power during a global economic crisis and went on to win three more elections. During this tenure, the UK’s economy slowed down and a series of scandals hit the party. The high cost of living has been a major factor in the mounting dissent against the ruling Conservative Party.

In all, intense campaigning by the ruling Conservative Party led by Rishi Sunak and the opposition Labour Party led by Keir Starmer has come to an end. Even as each of them exudes confidence about winning the election, portents are that the Labour Party has a lot going its way.
