Prakasam Barrage Sets an All-Time Record After 125 Years!

Continuous heavy rains have created havoc in Andhra Pradesh. Several colonies and low-lying areas flooded as the rains have turned unabated, which created a sense of panic amongst the residents. Vijayawada city is badly hit, and floodwaters have disrupted daily life in the town. Authorities said that this time, there was a record level of rain in three decades. The excessive rains in that area have swollen the Budameru River and submerged several colonies. Besides, landslides at many places took place. In fact, for the first time, an unprecedented volume of floodwater flow is recorded in Prakasam Barrage. Here is the detail:

Presently, Vijayawada has been inundated with flood caused by heavy rains, as water is found everywhere. The Prakasam Barrage has been seen to be reeling under the floodwater overflow, a record of sorts because the water flow has crossed above 1.1 million cusecs for the first time. Presently, it is dangerous because the flood levels at Prakasam Barrage reached levels never seen in 125 years.

Inflow at Prakasam Barrage has crossed 1.125 million cusecs-an alarming situation. The floodwater rose to an all-time high of more than 1 million cusecs on October 5, 2009. The previous one was on October 7, 1903, when floodwater touched 1,060,830 cusecs, according to officials. At present, with over 1.1 million cusec flow at the Prakasam Barrage, people in the Krishna River basin are worried.

With heavy rains, breaching of Budameru has inundated places like Singh Nagar, Prakash Nagar, Bombay Colony, Pipe Road, Khandrika, New Rajeshwaripeta, Urmila Nagar, YSR Colony, and Jakkampudi Colony. Several houses are filled with water and are causing much problem for the people of the area. Presently, the floodwaters are touching the edges of the Krishnalanka Railway Bridge, and the force of water at Prakasam Barrage washed away a few boats. The Meteorological Department has warned the local residents to be on guard in view of these heavy rains.
