While characters and scenes from the Ramayana occupy a place of pride in Prasanth Varma’s Cinematic Universe, those from the Mahabharata fill the screens with action in the Kalki Cinematic Universe.

Prasanth Varma – Nag Ashwin: Many are aware of the fact that this fad of linking one film to another with a name-of ‘cinematic universe’ began in Hollywood. Now, it has reached India and then Tollywood, particularly. A Tamil director named Lokesh Kanagaraj announced the so-called Lokesh Cinematic Universe. It has created lots of noise, especially among fans and audiences about connective stuff across his films.

In Bollywood, Yash Raj Films has announced something like the Spy Universe by putting all spy movies together. It was Prasanth Varma who introduced Telugu cinema to the concept of the ‘Prasanth Varma Cinematic Universe’ through his movie “Hanu-Man.” “Hanu-Man,” a small film at the time it was released during the festival of Sankranti in January, turned out to be a roaring success by collecting 350 crores. This movie featured Ramayana characters like Hanuman and Vibhishana. Their overwhelming response in theaters notwithstanding, besides announcing a sequel, “Jai Hanuman,” Prasanth Varma declared the launch of his cinematic universe.

More films are envisioned to be part of the Prasanth Varma Cinematic Universe, and each character in “Hanu-Man” will make an appearance somewhere or another in the other films. Right at the climax, “Hanu-Man” shows that the characters from Ramayana too are going to appear in the next movies. Speculation is rife that the seven immortals in our epics shall also turn up in this universe. Not the whole Ramayana, but its important characters and scenes will make their appearances.

A few days ago, Nag Ashwin announced his Kalki Cinematic Universe with the film “Kalki,” which went on to become a massive hit. It displayed glimpses of the Mahabharata with characters like Krishna, Arjuna, Karna, Ashwathama, and Uttara. From the climax and what Nag Ashwin has told the media about the Kalki Cinematic Universe, the universe would seem to be entirely based on the Mahabharata. He has already said that every character from the Mahabharata featured in his “Kalki” will come into the universe. Also added are more characters and scenes from the epic.

Nag Ashwin also mentioned that only two films would be part of the Kalki Cinematic Universe; out of these characters in the film, though, there might be some separate films that could be made. Hence, even if the whole of the Mahabharata is not shown in “Kalki Part 2,” several scenes and characters of the epic would comprise.

Thus, it is that Prasanth Varma’s Cinematic Universe features characters and shots from the Ramayana, and Kalki Cinematic Universe features those from the Mahabharata. That itself explains how the directors are relating the current stories with those elements of the epics to create much interest and hype for the upcoming movies. Much-awaited flicks of Prasanth Varma and Nag Ashwin.
