“Rail Safety: Introducing ‘Kavach'”

Rail Safety Introducing Kavach

According to the Railway Ministry, the Indian Railways intend to implement the Kavach safety system on a 44,000-kilometer track within the next five years. Kavach is an automated rail safety system made to keep trains from getting into accidents on the tracks. Authorities ordered the installation of this system on all locomotives during the Kavach 4.0 review meeting. Late rail line mishaps have provoked activity from the focal government. As part of a transformative mission, Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnav ordered the expedited implementation of the Kavach system following a significant incident on June 17 involving the West Bengal railway. The Kavach system is currently under development by manufacturers.

Tenders are normal soon for the establishment of Kavach on the Delhi-Mumbai and Delhi-Howrah courses. The Indian Rail routes has been utilizing robotized train security frameworks (ATPS) since the 1980s to further develop wellbeing. The Train Collision Avoidance System (TCAS) version 1 was implemented as the first of its kind by the Indian Railways in 2016. After effective preliminaries, the framework was formally acknowledged as the public ATPS in 2020.

How does the safety system from Kavach function?
The Automatic Train Protection (ATP) system that is a part of the Research Design and Standards Organization (RDSO) is the Kavach system. It increases railway safety. Using trackside Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) tags, it monitors train speed and assists railway operators in making decisions to ensure safe travel in normal and challenging environmental conditions. It is compatible with current electronic systems and meets Safety Integrity Level 4 (SIL-4) standards.

In order to guarantee the train’s safety, the Kavach system applies the brakes automatically if the driver fails to respond immediately. In order to identify signal anomalies, it operates trains within a 5-kilometer radius, making manual verification on the dashboard display easier and reducing errors. In 2022, the system was tested with success.
