Indian Railways has taken another important decision. The railways have changed the sleep timings for passengers traveling on trains. Time and again, the Railways keeps on revising its rules and regulations. Many people prefer to travel by train for long distances. However, lot many are not aware of the rules that need to be followed while traveling. The new rules the Railways has set are essential ones to know for those who travel by train.

Revised sleep timings by Indian Railways for passengers It has appealed to the passengers occupying the side lower berths in Air Conditioned and Sleeper coaches not to sleep for a long time. The decision, no doubt, is a relief for the passengers occupying other berths. It goes without saying that the train coaches have upper, middle and lower berths. In AC and Sleeper trains, the passengers are provided with middle berths, meant for sleeping at night. But, this mostly disturbs the passengers seated on the lower berth when the middle berth is opened at any time.

On the other hand, sleeping for more than the stipulated time is troublesome for middle berth passengers to those on the lower and upper berths. Frequent complaints over this issue by passengers forced Railways to take this decision, thereby changing sleep timings for middle berth passengers.

*Timing Change:*

Sleeper and AC class passengers can have a sleep on their allotted berths for only eight hours as per the new guidelines. This used to be nine hours earlier when a period of 9 pm to 6 am was given to the passengers to sleep. Now, in the new guidelines, the middle berth is permitted to open till 10 pm only and it has to be closed by 6 am. There is a strict ban on sleeping during the day for middle berth passengers. After the 8-hour duration, the passengers traveling in the lower berth can rightfully ask for the middle berth to be closed. The Railways Department has clarified, at the same time, the above restrictions will have to be adhered to compulsorily by all passengers.

*Exemptions:*

It has asked for some exceptions from these rules—fellow passengers should allow those with a disability, pregnant women, and the sick to sleep for long.
