How does Team India captain Rohit Sharma interact with the team? What are his strengths? What are his weaknesses? Many can quickly answer these questions based on what they see on the field, but the secrets of the dressing room are known to very few. Former India batting coach Vikram Rathour revealed some of these insights in a recent interview.

Rathour mentioned that Rohit Sharma’s strategies are hard for anyone to understand immediately. He also pointed out that Rohit has a bit of memory loss, often forgetting his mobile phones and gadgets on buses. Team members usually notice and return them to him. Even when heading out to the field, Rohit sometimes forgets whether to choose batting or bowling after winning the toss, leading to confusion.

However, once he steps onto the field, Rohit immerses himself in the game and quickly adapts his strategies. Rathour shared an example from the T20 World Cup final, where after Axar Patel’s over, no one had any confidence left. But Rohit Sharma strategically handled the situation.

He brought Bumrah to bowl earlier because he believed that if the opposition had more runs to chase in the final over, they would feel the pressure. None of them understood this strategy at first. When Bumrah’s quota of overs ended, they were worried, but both Bumrah and Arshdeep bowled brilliantly.

In the final over, with 16 runs needed, Rohit handed the ball to Hardik Pandya. Pandya, with all his strength and experience, bowled exceptionally, leading India to win the T20 World Cup. Rathour emphasized that without Rohit’s strategic decisions, they might not have won the World Cup.

Vikram Rathour served as the batting coach when Rahul Dravid was the head coach. However, after Gautam Gambhir came in, the support staff was changed. Currently, the BCCI is looking into assigning Rathour new responsibilities. VVS Laxman is the head of the National Cricket Academy (NCA), and after his term, it was expected that Rathour might take over. However, there are chances that Laxman’s tenure might be extended by another year. In that case, Rathour might be assigned other responsibilities within the NCA.
