Samantha Hails Hema Committee 'Truths' on Harassment

The Malayalam film industry has been passing through an important controversy regarding the casting couch and harassment of women in the industry. The Hema Committee was put together for the investigation of such incidents, and prepares reports; now one report has been issued, revealing the women’s miseries, which in turn is causing an uproar. After the release of this report, a number of people came out to speak about their harrowing experience which had been caused by this, leading to great publicity and anger.

Many of the stalwarts of Malayalam film have reacted to the report of the Hema Committee, expressing their incredulity and sadness over the situation. They candidly admitted that they never even imagined such conditions could prevail inside the industry. Among the many who spoke, actress Samantha Ruth Prabhu has spoken out on record for the first time on the report. Samantha was thankful to the committee for this and also put on record the vital role of the Women in Cinema Collective, which played the prime role in this bold attempt.

Samantha says in her Instagram story, “For years now, I’ve been watching with great pride the work of this amazing organization WCC. It is due to their proactive measures that the Hema Committee was able to generate this report which has revealed many issues and problems faced by women of the industry. Women are still fighting for basic needs. I hope this is done and dusted with immediate stringent actions. I thank my friends and sisters in the WCC for their relentless efforts yet again”.

The bombshell presentation by the Hema Committee shook the Malayalam film industry with dark revelations of various kinds of sexual harassment women faced in Bengaluru. Many senior actors were accused, and this brought in a lot of criticisms and calls for accountability. Later on, the president of AMMA, Mohanlal, along with 17 other members, submitted his resignation letter, shouldering moral responsibilities over the allegations slapped against the association.
