SCO Summit in Kazakhstan: Address by Jaishankar


External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar congratulated Iran for attending as a member of the organization. He expressed deep condolences on the part of the President for the death of Raisi in a helicopter crash. Jaishankar went on to congratulate President Lukashenko, and he welcomed Belarus as a new member of the organization. He said that the purpose of the summit is to ponder over and mitigate the impact of incidents against humanity.

Announcing the first preference to fight terrorism jointly, Jaishankar said this was one of the aims of the SCO. He opined that border violations were dangerous for peace and security. Not only that, but terrorism in whatever form was intolerable. Jaishankar appealed to all other countries to help in isolating those countries giving shelter and provocation to terrorists. He demanded that cross-border terrorism had to be given a firm response.

He also said another big global threat was climate change. He said they used to target on alternative energy resources and boost the use of electric vehicles. He remembered that when India was the chair, it was the SCO that passed a resolution on decarbonization. He again told them there could be no accomplishment of any project without connectivity and infrastructure.

In equal measure, he argued strongly for non-discriminatory trade rights and transportation systems and urged serious discussion on the models within the SCO. He said that technology would make it now the 21st century and therefore the need for harnessing technology for creative social welfare and progress. On artificial intelligence, he described that India is also among the first few countries to prepare a national strategy on AI and launch the AI mission.

It was a summation of the address by Jaishankar on behalf of Prime Minister Modi to the 24th SCO Summit in Astana, Kazakhstan. During this summit, Jaishankar presented the message of Modi on terrorism, climate change, and economic development. He said SCO is holding an important place in India’s foreign policy and India is to host the meeting of the Council of Heads of Government in 2020, and in 2023, the country is to host the meeting of the Council of Heads of State.
