With the increasing trend of social media, even the talent of an ordinary individual has found a platform to showcase and rise to fame overnight. Along with being an entertainment entity, it has slowly become a source of income for many. Content creators are making millions of views and converting their presence into a lucrative career. Similarly, recognising the potential, the Uttar Pradesh government, in a major move, introduced a new social media policy where an influencer can earn up to Rs 8 lakh per month by promoting government schemes.

It has been observed that in recent years, social media has gained more influence and spreads faster compared to traditional media. It is for this reason that political parties connect with the public through this medium. Promotion of campaigns, government schemes, events, and successes is solely done through social media. The fact that social media is influencing many elements, most political parties are into setting up their wings related to social media to maintain and manage their digital presence.

Against that backdrop, the Yogi Adityanath-led government in Uttar Pradesh has decided to leverage social media with the help of influencers for its schemes. For that purpose, it has drafted a fresh social media policy wherein the latter can earn an amount of Rs 8 lakh per month by creating awareness about different governmental initiatives.

This decision of the UP government is expected to be a game-changer for the social media influencers, turning their online presence into a highly profitable venture. In return for such lucrative amounts, what the influencers have to do is promote the government’s schemes, advertise party activities, and highlight the successes of the ruling party.

On the other side, the new policy also involves strict measures against those posting anti-national content on social media. Punishment for offenders could range from three years’ imprisonment to life sentences. The dual approach tends to take up the power of social media for a positive promotion and put its misuse to a stop.

It, therefore, is a golden opportunity for the policy in Uttar Pradesh as far as social media influencers are concerned, cashing in on their influence through handsome earnings in collaboration with the government.
