Soon after the T20 World Cup 2024, the excitement still lingering, the Indian players who clinched the cup are going to return home. Amidst the joy of millions of fans and players celebrating the victory of the title, the Men in Blue get ready to face another thrilling series. Team India is going to face Zimbabwe in a 5-match T20 series from 6th July onwards. In this series, young opener Shubman Gill will be the captain. Along with him will be Ruturaj Gaikwad, Abhishek Sharma, Rinku Singh, Dhruv Jurel, Riyan Parag, Washington Sundar, Ravi Bishnoi, Avesh Khan, and Tushar Deshpande in the Indian representation.

There is a strong lineup that the selectors have chosen for the series against Zimbabwe, comprising powerful batters and equally strong bowlers. So the experts have asserted that India would clean sweep the series. However, the other way round, Zimbabwe is not the side to deal with lightly, having dangerous players in its kitty like skipper Sikandar Raza. Let us get into the challenges in store for Captain Gill ahead.

The first challenge for Gill will be to do well as an opener and batter. He has done brilliantly in all three formats for the past many years, and because of that, he is a regular player. That talent took him to the captaincy and in this series, he needs to score big to prove he is the right guy for the job at the opening position instead of Rohit Sharma.

The other challenge for Gill will be to take the team to a clean sweep against Zimbabwe. With a whitewash, he will prove himself as an able successor of the Rohit Sharma-led team. He also has to get the best performance from other players in the team. If Gill succeeds as a captain in T20s, perhaps in future also he can take over the ODI captaincy from Rohit and surpass players like Hardik Pandya and Shreyas Iyer.

With the farewell of T20s by Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli, at least now they are going to focus on ODIs and Tests. So, with only six ODIs scheduled before the Champions Trophy, we are definitely going to see much more of the Rohit-Kohli duo in Tests. If their era is going to end, then a new legend should come into Team India. This is the best chance for Gill to prove the point that he is potent enough to shoulder Indian cricket forward, picking up the baton from these legends.
