Indian authorities are probing Telegram over gambling and extortion concerns. The investigation could result in a ban, led by Indian Cybercrime Coordination Centre I4C under Ministry of Home Affairs – MHA and Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology- MeitY.

Previously, the UGC-NEET question paper was also leaked on Telegram and was being sold there. Questions were raised about Telegram’ role in facilitating such illegal activities.
Telegram founder and CEO Pavel Durov was arrested in Paris on 24th August over his app’s moderation policies which include failure to prevent criminal activities on the platform. Tech billionaire Elon Musk and whistleblower Edward Snowden criticized the arrest of Pavel Durov.
Currently, Telegram has over 5M registered users in India. Telegram does follow India’s IT Rules.
