'‘Undermining Peace Efforts’. Zelenskyy Slams PM Modi's Visit to Russia"

Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi visited Russia for two days and held friendly talks with Russian President Vladimir Putin. This act has been the subject of strong criticism by Ukrainian President Zelenskyy. This fills him with a great deal of sadness, and he states, “Very painful to hear that the PM of India is in talks with Russia; it does not help our work to end the war and our peacemaking efforts.”

This is Prime Minister Modi’s first visit to Russia after it launched a full-scale attack on Ukraine in February 2022. In this backdrop, the informal meeting of Modi with Putin at Vnukovo Airport in Moscow has raised the anxiety levels in Ukraine together with the Western countries. Just the other day, a well-documented Russian missile attack on a children’s hospital in the Ukrainian capital city of Kyiv has resulted in the tragic deaths of at least 24 persons.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has reacted particularly strongly to the maximum Indian importance given by Russian President Vladimir Putin as an invitation chief guest. Welcoming the visiting Indian Prime Minister at the G7 summit last month, Zelenskyy said: “It’s very disappointing to see that leader of the world’s biggest democracy (Modi) embracing a person (Putin) responsible for so much bloodshed and cruelty, a criminal. This is a devastating blow to our peace efforts.”

Yesterday, Modi congratulated President Putin and hugged him. Then he took a ride on a golf cart in Putin’s vast estate. Modi believes that peaceful talks should definitely be held regarding the solution of the conflict in Ukraine.

The United States, being an ardent supporter of Ukraine, cautioned India to ensure that its actions were under the umbrella of unwavering respect for UN principles and sovereign equality vis-á-vis Ukraine. Meanwhile, on this side of the border, Russian attacks in Ukraine continued to cause devastation.

Over 40 Russian missiles caused destruction on Ukrainian cities on Monday, striking the country’s largest children’s hospital and buildings. The airstrikes even caused disruptions at heart surgeries and made doctors treat cancer patients outdoors. This assault has reportedly taken the lives of at least 41 people, according to Ukrainian officials.

This has been the most extensive bombing raid over Kyiv by Russia in four months.
