VVS Laxman is reportedly set to become the new head coach of the Indian cricket team, succeeding Rahul Dravid. Dravid’s two-year contract as the head coach came to an end following India’s loss in the ODI World Cup final against Australia on November 19, 2023. Dravid, who took over the top job after Ravi Shastri’s departure in late 2021, has expressed his disinterest in extending his contract further.
According to sources close to the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI), Dravid is not interested in continuing as the full-time coach. He has had a long association with the Indian team, first as a player for nearly two decades and then as a coach for the past few years. Dravid is open to a role at the National Cricket Academy (NCA) in Bengaluru, a position he previously held, which would allow him to stay back in his hometown. He is also fine with coaching the team sporadically but not as a full-time head coach.
Meanwhile, VVS Laxman, currently the head of the NCA and acting as the head coach for India’s ongoing T20I series against Australia, has shown keen interest in the head coach position. He has previously assumed the role during second-string Indian team tours and home series when Dravid was not available. Laxman is likely to sign a long-term contract as the Team India coach, with his first assignment in the role expected to be the upcoming tour of South Africa.
Additionally, Rahul Dravid is reportedly in talks with an IPL team for a two-year contract. This move suggests a shift in Dravid’s career towards roles that offer him more flexibility and less of the intensive travel associated with the full-time coaching of the national team.
