Where is Sajjala Ramakrishna Reddy?

Questions are being asked in Andhra Pradesh politics about the whereabouts and role of Sajjala Ramakrishna Reddy. Where earlier Sajjala used to address press conferences and aggressively explain the policies of the YSRCP, now his keeping away from the public view has become a subject of discussion. From Kodali Nani, Perni Nani, Roja, Amarnath, and Ambati Rambabu, leaders earlier used to conduct press meets for YSRCP, but their statements were mostly confined to the berating of Pawan Kalyan, Chandrababu Naidu, and Lokesh. When it came to explaining policies, it was left to Sajjala to take the lead and explain party and government policies.

But ever since the power shifted, Sajjala has been missing from the scene. He has not been speaking on party-related issues at all. Even on vital issues like Jagan’s opposition status and the merger of YSRCP with Congress, he has kept mum. The other day, Perni Nani conducted a press conference regarding the very same crucial issues. Now, speculations are rife as to whether Jagan has changed his priorities and moved away from Sajjala. There are speculations that Jagan himself might believe that Sajjala was one of the reasons for defeat.

One can find many people in the YSRCP pointing at Sajjala Ramakrishna Reddy as the reason whenever they are asked to specify on the reasons for defeat. It is being said that Sajjala has been acting like a wall between Jagan and ground realities. Though several leaders warned Jagan about this well before the elections, he did not listen to them. Exasperated by severe allegations leveled against Sajjala, Kotam Reddy Sridhar Reddy and Anam Ramnarayan Reddy left the party. Then Jagan had his ministers and MLAs indulge in vicious verbal attacks on Sridhar Reddy and Anam Ramnarayan Reddy. But even after this election defeat, many YSRCP leaders continue to target Sajjala. Recently, former Gurajala MLA Kasu Mahesh Reddy has also made severe comments against Sajjala. He criticised Sajjala for acting as a wall, obstructing MLAs and ministers from meeting Jagan. According to Mahesh Reddy, Sajjala encouraged ministers to make statements without discipline, which was the reason behind YSRCP’s massive defeat.

It is not only Mahesh Reddy – several other leaders are of the opinion openly and implicitly that Sajjala is the man who brought this defeat. While some are openly expressing their points of view, another set of leaders are muttering among themselves. Reviews have been prevailing for a long time that Sajjala managed all affairs though Jagan had a cabinet of ministers. Though the criticisms were sans political hue, Jagan did not dare to recognize the truth. Sources said that he recognised the reality after the defeat and kept Sajjala out of the circuit.

Another version is that Jagan is not the one who would act on loose talk. Had Jagan listened to such criticisms, he wouldn’t have suffered this decisive defeat. Those within the YSRCP are said to admit, off-the-record, that it wasn’t Jagan who drifted away from Sajjala but that Sajjala himself stopped responding after the desired harm was done. There are also reports that his son, Sajjala Bhargav Reddy, was removed from social media responsibilities. Whatever be the fact, there has been basically a gap between Sajjala and Jagan.
