Politics is the world’s greatest game of strategy, betrayal, and alliances. Currently, the political landscape of Andhra Pradesh is deeply intertwined with the central government. Relationships are fluid, and foes can become friends overnight. The YSR Congress Party (YSRCP), led by Jagan Mohan Reddy, recently revealed its strategy during the Lok Sabha Speaker election by openly supporting the NDA.

This sudden shift raises questions. Why did Jagan, who once criticized the coalition, now seek its support? The recent establishment of a new government in Andhra Pradesh means Jagan needs to survive politically for the next five years. His only viable option appears to be aligning with the central power, i.e., Modi.

During the election campaign, Jagan launched numerous attacks on the coalition. However, he has now extended a hand of friendship and openly supported the NDA in the Speaker election. Speculation arises whether this move is driven by fear of legal repercussions. Jagan faces numerous court cases related to illegal assets, which could potentially send him back to jail if he doesn’t have central support.

Before becoming Chief Minister, Jagan frequently attended court hearings. Now, as a regular MLA, he might have to face these cases again. Losing power and facing legal challenges simultaneously would be a significant blow. Hence, aligning with Modi appears to be his strategic refuge.

In 2014, even as an opposition leader, Jagan never openly criticized the NDA. Upon coming to power, he continued to align with Modi. Although the recent elections saw the TDP in the coalition, Jagan reaffirmed his support for the NDA during the Speaker election, sparking discussions in Andhra Pradesh.

The underlying strategy behind supporting Modi seems twofold: avoiding old cases and ensuring that Chandrababu Naidu, his main rival, doesn’t take daring steps against him. Whether this move is out of fear or political strategy, Jagan’s support for Modi remains a critical element in his political survival. The reaction of the TDP to this development remains to be seen.
