Just a few days ago, the president of Sri Lanka, Gotabaya Rajapaksa stepped down from his post, amid the worst-ever economic adversities. Earlier today, he flew out of his country to the Maldives.
Moments before thousands of people broke through force barricades and entered Rajapaksa’s official compound, the president absconded from his residence in Colombo this week.
Reports say that Rajapaksa boarded a military jet late at night and landed in Male, the capital of Maldives. He jetted off to the popular tourist destination with 5 of his family members and three staffers.
Earlier, Rajapaksa said that he would not quit the presidency until his family exits safely from the Island nation. Post the rise of the economic crisis, the prime minister Ranil Wickremesinghe had resigned from his post, along with other 26 ministers. Rajapaksa’s replacement will be elected by the parliament on the 20th of this month.
