Delhi, Sep 27: In a historical first, Supreme Court of India (SC) live streamed its hearings on Tuesday. This is considered a watershed moment in the history of Indian Judiciary, as livestreaming the court proceedings, will go a long way in ensuring transparency and technology adoption in judiciary. On the first day of live streaming, hearing related to reservations for Economically Weaker Sections (EWS) was taken up.
Initially livestreaming of Supreme Court proceedings will be done on YouTube platform. SC is planning to set up its own platform in the future to live stream its proceedings. Initially the hearings before SC’s Constitution Bench will be live streamed. These are the hearings which are of national importance and livestreaming them will ensure that people know exactly what has happened, thus preventing misunderstandings and misinformation.
In fact the decision to livestream SC proceedings was taken way back in September, 2018. But due to various reasons it has been delayed by four years. Already High Courts of several states like Gujarat and Orissa have been live streaming proceedings.
