On Monday, the International Ice Hockey Federation (IIHF) draped the two teams Russia and Belarusia from the competitions prior to the arrival of further notice and invalidated the rights of Russia to host the World Junior Championship 2023.
The president of IIHF, Luc Tardif said, “We are incredibly shocked to see the images that have come out of Ukraine. I have been in touch with the Ice Hockey Federation of Ukraine and we hope for all Ukrainians that this tussle can be settled in tranquility and without requirement for further savagery.”
Moreover, Russian teams have been suspended by FIFA and UEAF from international football. The international olympic committee’s executive board recommended federations on Monday to ban both the Russian and Belarusian athletes from the sport event.
Canada is set to host the world junior championships in August, an event Russia has triumphed three times in the last 20 years and reached the podium 16 times.
