Veteran leader Mallikarjun Kharge has created history by becoming the Congress party president on Wednesday. Kharge, who was considered a favourite all through the campaign, won with a huge majority over his rival Shahi Tharoor. While Mallikarjun Kharge got 7897 votes, Shashi Tharoor got 1072 votes, much lesser. Thus Kharge won with a huge majority than what was expected.
With this victory, Mallikarjun Kharge has not reached the zenith of his political career but created a special place for himself in not just the history of Congress party but also in Indian politics. Because, Congress is the party which participated in the freedom struggle and build the nation post independence. Leading Congress is seen as a prestigious thing by one and all.
Moreover this time Congres president elections have come at a time, when party is badly in need of an effective leadership. As grand old party is going through its worst phase, the new president has huge responsibilities on his shoulder to revive party. With veteran Mallikarjun Kharge taking Congress president post, now not just Congress party workers but even general public willl look up to him to take on PM Modi’s BJP.
