Truecaller announced that it would remove the call recording feature from its platform on May 11, as soon as the announcement made by Google that it was banning call recording apps. Responding to the news, an official of Truecaller said, “According to the updated Google developer program policies, we are not ready to provide call recordings any longer. This will not affect devices that have call recording built into the device natively.”
He further explained that they had introduced call recording for all Android smartphones according to consumer demand. Call Recording on Truecaller was free for everyone, permission-based, and required users to access the feature using the Google Accessibility.” As the company assumes it to be a seizure of users’ privacy, Google has been against call recording apps and services for many years.
The call recording feature on Google’s own Dialer app comes with a loud “this call is now being recorded” alert, which is heard on both sides before the recording starts, and this is for the same reason mentioned above. Real-time call recording was blocked by Google on Android 6 and Android 10 to recall. It removed in-call audio recording over the microphone.
Recently updated play store policies read, “The accessibility API is not designed and cannot be requested for remote call audio recording.” Google also explicated that the change will affect only third-party apps. This justifies that call recording on the Google Dialer will still function if it is available on your device or region. Any preloaded Dialer apps with a call recording feature will also function. Only the apps downloaded from the Google Play store will be removed. And this is the important point to be remembered.
