Resembling smallpox, Monkeypox is the new pandemic-type disease that has been spreading fast worldwide. So far, the number of confirmed cases of the disease has reached 219 worldwide, as per the information published by the European Union’s disease agency. The European Union said, “This is the first time that chains of transmission are reported in Europe without known epidemiological links to West or Central Africa, where this disease is endemic.”
Initially, Monkeypox’s unusual appearance was found in the United Kingdom in early May and at present, it is having the largest bulk of 71 confirmed cases. Recently, Spain has recorded 51 cases and 37 were recorded in Portugal. Canada has 15, while the United States has recorded 9 cases. The total number of cases reported on Wednesday has risen fivefold since its first count on May 20, when the EU said there were 38 cases.
The clinical presentation is obviously determined to be mild and there have been no fatalities. Compared to Smallpox, Monkeypox is a less severe disease and it became endemic in eleven countries in West and Central Africa. Monkeypox spreads by a bite or direct contact with an infected animal’s blood, meat, or bodily fluids and initial symptoms include a high fever prior to quickly developing into a rash.
The infected people will get a chickenpox-like rash on their faces and hands. There is no treatment for this contaminating disease. But the symptoms usually recover after 2-4 weeks and it could not lead to death.
