Om Birla Re-elected as Speaker of the 18th Lok Sabha

Om Birla has created history by being re-elected as the Speaker of the Lok Sabha for the second consecutive time. It was indeed a significant election process that happened in the Lok Sabha on Wednesday. Birla won by voice vote against the candidate put in by the INDIA alliance. Of prime importance to note here is that this happens to be the first time in 48 years that an election towards the Speakers’ position has taken place.

Now, Om Birla of the Kota-Bundi constituency of the Lok Sabha has made history by getting elected as the Speaker of the Lok Sabha for the second consecutive time. First, he was made Speaker of the House in 2019 under the central government led by Prime Minister Narendra Modi. This time too, the NDA pitched for Birla’s candidature, and due to the majority with the NDA, the other parties also supported him, because of which he was re-elected.

The re-election of Om Birla is of great success as he equaled the record of Balram Jakhar of Rajasthan, who represented two consecutive terms as the Speaker of the Lok Sabha. Earlier, Neelam Sanjeeva Reddy, GMC Balayogi, and PA Sangma became Speakers twice but could not get full five-year terms.

The political journey of Om Birla started during his school days. He was elected as a president of the student union in the year 1978-79 and joined politics. He held various positions in BJP, its youth wing, etc. Birla remained undefeated in the six major elections he has contested so far.

It was a surprise for all that Birla was entrusted with the responsibility of the post of Speaker despite his lack of very extensive experience in Parliament; that too immediately after the 2019 Lok Sabha elections. His efficient leadership in the Lok Sabha was highly praised which resulted in his re-election in 2024. Now, Birla became the first lore Sabha Speaker who served in the old and new Parliament house.

Born on November 23, 1962, at Kota in Rajasthan, Om Birla did his M.Com from Maharshi Dayanand Saraswati University in 1986. He was married to Dr. Amita Birla on March 11, 1991, and they have two daughters: Akanksha and Anjali. In the political and personal journey of Om Birla lies an example of dedication and commitment to serving the public, and his re-election as Lok Sabha Speaker assumes importance.
