This new device helps to check lung functioning easily

Recently, Dr. Prashanth Rajdeep from the physiology department of the Medical college Baroda has sophisticated a device that reduces the amount of voluntary effort that patients put during pulmonary function tests while examining the capacity of the lungs.

Rajdeep said that PFTs are conducted in medical science to check the functioning of the patient’s lungs. During PFT, the patient must inhale-exhale to the maximum capacity, but it is required to make repeated efforts during the doctor’s analysis while performing the test. If the process is not executed correctly, then it is hard to find any result, so the test fails.

The device was found mainly to reduce the number of efforts a patient has to make. The patient has to wear a jacket while taking the PTF. The jacket consists of multiple layers. It uses cold water in a jacket as stimuli for inspiration and later pressurizes air in the same jacket as an aid for expiration.

Rajdeep explained that it resembles the inspiratory gasp that one takes if cold water is poured on patients. He had applied for a patent in 2014 before which the device was tested on patients. This method is convenient for patients as it will reduce the efforts that they should put in, and it saves time and energy for medical practitioners while guiding the patients.
