On Thursday, the south zone police advised shopkeepers to down shutters by 8 pm. As there were hardly any customers during the day, most of them closed by 7.45 pm on Thursday.
There are approximately three thousand pushcarts and kiosks that command an overall daily business turnover of Rs 5.50 crores. Liquor shops and petrol pumps shut down their businesses even before the early closure announcement made by the police.
The police said that, after 8 pm, there would also be a ban on protest rallies. The south zone beat constables and personnel in Rakshak vehicles were directed by senior authorities to assure that all shops close by a specific time.
