VIMS performed first nasal Covid-19 vaccine trials on a youngster

The Visakha Institute of Medical Science (VIMS) made the third phase of the clinical trial of the Covid-19 intranasal vaccine (BBV154) on a youngster yesterday. VIMS is the only hospital in Andhra Pradesh among 17 locations in the country to have the trials of the Covid-19 nasal vaccine that is meant for people who have never got vaccinated until now.

The director of the hospital Dr. Rambabu said that clinical trials would be done in various phases on the people who are aged between 18-65 years. This nasal drop is easier and safer than the inoculation of the vaccine by injection.

He said that around 3,000 volunteers will be given the vaccine across the nation along with 40 at VIMS. The medical experts from VIMS hospital have administered the first dose of the vaccine to a 20-year-old youngster in Vizag And 4 volunteers were administered the doses.

The nasal vaccine stimulates both systemic and mucosal immune responses by creating an immune response in the nose. It will be helpful for the prevention of infection and the transmission of the virus. The government will begin the doses for the general public within the next few months, said Dr. Rambabu.
