India-South Africa Final Match Records Peak Concurrent Viewership of 5.3 Crore

The T20 World Cup fever hasn’t subsided yet and seems like it won’t go away anytime soon. For the next week, some news related to it will keep making waves on the internet. The live match between India and South Africa, filled with nerve-wracking suspense, was watched by a staggering number of viewers in India. According to Disney Hotstar officials, a peak concurrent viewership of 5.3 crore was recorded. Along with this platform, the final match was also broadcast live on Star Sports Network on TV.

There was a massive viewership across various devices including TVs, mobile phones, and laptops. However, the 2023 ODI World Cup final match against Australia garnered even more viewers. That match was watched by 5.9 crore people, as stated by officials. They claim that no other cricket match has received such high viewership to date.

The exact number of people who watched the live broadcast on TV will be revealed by the Broadcast Audience Research Council in a week. This data will show how many viewers were from each country. Based on this information, ratings for Team India’s matches are assigned, which in turn influences ad revenue. Each advertisement during the live broadcast of the 2024 T20 final match is expected to generate revenue in crores. Additionally, satellite rights in the international market will also be worth hundreds of crores.

The T20 World Cup matches were jointly hosted by the West Indies and the USA. Interestingly, the semi-finals, Super 8, and final matches held in the West Indies did not attract large crowds.

One might think this would result in a loss for the organizers. However, they generate substantial income through satellite rights, TV advertisements, and stadium advertisements, amounting to hundreds of crores. Moreover, sponsors place their product posters, banners, and flex boards in the stadium. The ticket sales from the public who come to watch the matches in the stadium cover the event’s operational costs, leaving the rest as profit.
